A few blocks east of Vancouver’s main business district, Downtown East Side is an urban neighbourhood running along East Hastings Street with waterfront access. Although it has been described as a stable, lower-income area, it is rich with art and history with “20% of the buildings on the Vancouver’s heritage register”. With a mixed history of social issues and social activism, the neighbourhood has a notably strong and welcoming sense of community. Recent developments have brought a feeling of revitalization to certain parts, making it an interesting area to watch for new Vancouver condos and trends.
Some good places to grab a bite are Vancouver Japanese Language, Mac Kenzie Room or Railtown Cafe. Venture a little further for a meal at one of the neighbourhood's restaurants. If you love coffee, you're not too far from J J Bean Coffee Roasters located at 460 Railway St. Groceries can be found at Tham's Market which is a 5-minute walk and you'll find Gentle Dental Vancouver a 4-minute walk as well. Interested in the arts? Look no further than Artwise Fine Art and Fazakas Gallery. Love being outside? Look no further than Oppenheimer Park and MacLean Park, which are both only steps away.
Transit riders take note, you are not far to the closest Bus Stop (Westbound Powell St @ Heatley Ave) with route Powell/downtown/ubc, route Nanaimo Station/dunbar, and more.
