A few blocks east of Vancouver’s main business district, Downtown East Side is an urban neighbourhood running along East Hastings Street with waterfront access. Although it has been described as a stable, lower-income area, it is rich with art and history with “20% of the buildings on the Vancouver’s heritage register”. With a mixed history of social issues and social activism, the neighbourhood has a notably strong and welcoming sense of community. Recent developments have brought a feeling of revitalization to certain parts, making it an interesting area to watch for new Vancouver condos and trends.
