Overview
Hands-down one of our favourite lofts in Toronto, the Brewery Lofts are truly spectacular.
Converted into live/work lofts in 1998/99, the Brewery Lofts (also known as the Lofts at 90 Sumach) are home to many artists, designers and other creative professionals - appropriate given the building's artistic roots. Interestingly - this wasn't a brewery originally. This loft is named after the surrounding buildings originally purchased by the developer that were once part of a 19th century brewery. But the Brewery Lofts do have a long and storied history nonetheless, as home to Canada's most beloved media outlet.
Originally a warehouse in the late 1950s, the Brewery Lofts soon became a design studio and prop warehouse for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation where such renowned and respected artists as Glenn Gould, Jim Henson and Lorne Michaels once worked.
One of the area's only authentic, hard loft conversions, this Toronto loft perfectly reflects its industrial heritage offering 14-foot ceilings, massive concrete pillars and lots of windows. Units vary in size and include one and two bedroom layouts as well as breathtaking penthouse suites with stairs to private rooftops - these are some of the most coveted penthouses in the City and rarely come on the market.
Once a gritty area, sandwiched between Regent Park and Corktown - both of which are undergoing a massive revitalization - the neighbourhood is changing, fast, with new restaurants, cafes and shops cropping up seemingly on every corner. For those wanting an industrial look in an edgy, up-and-coming neighbourhood, these coveted lofts could be just the thing.
Note that while the cost per square foot is very reasonable here for what you're getting - and maintenance fees are low - the unit sizes tend to be much larger than most Toronto condo buildings and so the overall list price may be prohibitive for some buyers, even on the smaller units (which are considered large by today's new build condo standards). Most residents tend to be young couples with dual household income or more mature buyers looking at a unit in the Brewery Lofts as a long-term or forever home versus just another step on the property ladder.

Most Notable Features
Sense of Community: The sense of community and pride of ownership at the Brewery Lofts is something really palpable for residents and a rare offering when comparing condos for sale in Toronto. Many owners are original to the conversion, purchasing back in 1999, and turnover is very low here. If you're lucky enough to score one of these stunning lofts, it could just be your home for life. You can connect with this loft community on their Facebook page.
Suite sizes and layouts: With suites ranging from 738 to a sprawling 3,695 square feet, residents will have plenty of space to live and work. The kitchens boast black and white chrome, and some suites have a double-showered bathroom.
Lofty bedrooms: Not only do the units at the Brewery Lofts have gorgeous, historic hard loft features, the split-level floorplans with elevated bedrooms overlooking the main living area give these Toronto lofts a true "lofty" feel.
A bit of history: History buffs will appreciate this building's lobby that has pictures and plaques as a nod to its CBC heritage. There's also a great video on 90 Sumach featuring current residents and former CBC employees telling stories about the building's heritage.
