Settled on the western shores of Lake Ontario, Oakville is one of the largest suburban cities in Halton Region. The city was officially formed in 1962, incorporating several surrounding villages, and it has since then become part of the GTA with more than 180,000 residents.
Originally a port and shipbuilding community, the city is divided into smaller neighbourhoods beginning with Old Oakville that is centered on Oakville Harbour and home to the city’s waterfront community. From there, the neighbourhoods spread out in almost every direction following the QEW highway connecting to Toronto. According to a 2006 census, the city has a notably young demographic living in largely urban residential areas. Currently, there are around 50 condos for sale in Oakville, with many buildings available for renters as well.
Oakville was industrialized in the early 20th century with the opening of car-manufacturing plants and oil-refineries. One of the city’s main claims to fame today is Sheridan College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning, perhaps Canada’s leading institute for design and business technical training. Needless to say, Oakville attracts many students and professionals in the art and design industries. There are many festivals throughout the year including the Downtown Oakville Jazz Festival, Waterfront Festival, and the Oakville Family Ribfest, as well as regular outlets for shopping and fine dining. With the natural tracts of the Niagara Escarpment very close by, Oakville enjoys many scenic outdoor spaces for hiking, skiing, as well as a vibrant waterfront community.
As a member of the Golden Horseshoe along the western corner of Lake Ontario between Toronto and Niagara, Oakville is a main stop along the GO Transit system. Not only is this a tremendous benefit for residents and visitors to the city, the expected expansion of the GO system should positively affect values and trends in the future.
